How to file an RTI.

We are living in times of 'information overload'. At the same time, we did not used to get adequate information. Information is simply information. It can be from a simple manual of 'how to operate a washing machine' to the everyday articles that we come across on Times of India or The Indian Express. However, we must be aware of what information we must preserve and what information we must discard.

Thanks to Revolutionaries such as Edward Snowden and Julian Assange, we got to experience and look at 'information' on a completely new level. The U.S government allegedly were rumoured to be spying on their citizens and also other countries too according o the Wikileaks reports. Those are the kind of information every citizen has a a right to know about because each citizen deserves to be told the truth and not be hidden from the evils of the government. That kind of information if of course more important than unwanted information such as what is Kim Kardashian going to be doing for summer this year (2016). That is pristine 'Yellow Journalism'.

We could always ask ourselves, how much is 'too much' information ?

Another revolutionary step was taken by the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel Public grievances and Pensions to provide-RTI (Right To Information) Portal Gateway by implementing the RTI Act 2005 to bring about transparency and accountability in the working of the government of India. This is an absolutely brilliant initiative. With the help of the RTI Act 2005, now, we could  attain information on any sectors from the government by issuing an RTI form, stating your queries and requests. The online procedure is very simple. All one has to do is make an account, login and file and RTI. If  you above the general poverty line, then you would have to pay  Rupees 10 and if you are under the general poverty line tenth application would not be  chargeable. All he information you want is just a click away.

Isn't this great ?

I applied for my first online RTI application today and it felt great.

My queries were for the Department of Health Research asking them how much does an average Indian spend on Health Insurance per year since the year 1990-2016(present day) and also if the expenditure of an average Indian on health sectors since the 1990 till 2016 has increased or decreased. I applied for this because I have been wondering quite a lot about how much money do we really put into health sectors because as they say, "Prevention is better than cure"; therefore, with the new information and knowledge I would be receiving I could be more aware and prevent spending too much when we could take care of ourselves. And, even at times of serious illnesses, we could invest accurately.

Now, it is your turn !

Go ahead, and try and apply your first RTI! It isn't that difficult to start with ! And, besides quenching your thirst for new unknown information, you would be promoting transparency and anti-corruption in our country by using full potential of the RTI Act 2005.
