REVOLUTION NATION :Project 1

Tradition- when push comes to shove.

Today was one of those days when some things just manage to shock you no matter how many times you have read about them, countless times-from time to time. It is almost like a plague, it is eating away humanity. One day, all shall remain will be corpses whose cries were heard but  ignored and countless haunting ghosts in ghost towns.

I entered a hospital called Guru Nanak Hospital which is situated in Palwal district of Haryana(India) in the hope of finding something to compliment my college assignment which was supposed to be on the hygiene report of the hospital, however, what I stumbled upon was beyond shocking. The hospital is run by Dr. Anup Singh-both chairman and the sole proprietor who graduated from Delhi University, which is a private hospital with absolutely no funding from the government. Its total staff consists of approximately 100 employees and 16 doctors. When asked, most patients we met in the hospital gave us good feedback on the hospital even though the premises needed serious repairing of some rooms and the under-constructed pharmacy. Nevertheless, Dr.Anup- a cheery man greeted us warmly and let us take his interview even though he refused to let us take any good shots of himself or record his voice. As I excused myself and wandered about to check out the entire hospital(which rather looked like an extended cousin of a local dentist's clinic)-I saw a very grim looking family sitting close by to one another by the I.C.U.

Sayeda* is the who for whom the grim looking family have brought food for. The one inside the I.C.U. She is a 22-year-old young woman with an unmistakable uncanny look about her. Apart from all that she is or she could be , she is the wife of a man called Sh. Saddam-who is no where to be seen in and around the I.C.U. Sayeda's parents' family are from Nangla village,Asanpur(Haryana). She was admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital 3 days ago. She survived an attempt to murder. She was allegedly poisoned by her mother-in-law because of hatred. Apparently, the groom's side had asked the bride's family for approximately 75,000 rupees as a 'dowry'; which the bride's side refused to pay. As told by Sayeda's* father, she was tortured mentally and physically abused within her marital home for many months but they had gone too far by attempting this horrible crime.

DOWRY(noun) : It is described by the dictionary as 'an amount of property or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage'.

Under the Dowry Prohibition Act(1961,Indian Penal Code)-practicing dowry, subsequently by sections 304B and 498A;is a punishable criminal offence.
Sayeda* inside the I.C.U of Guru Nanak Hospital

Guru Nanak Hospital in Palwal district of Haryana
gets at least minimum 10 cases on dowry related
cases per month.
Doctor Anup Singh warned me not to get involved

since it was a legal matter but this story-I do not
care how many times you would've heard about it,I
cannot help but share this, yet another story of a girl
victim of dowry abuse,a voice heard but hopefully
not ignored.

Sayeda's* baby-as seen on the ultrasound report
Sayeda* seems weak and fragile but she is determined not to go back to her husband's home. She bears a child within her and I wonder if the strength she gets is from her yet to be born child. Sayeda's* family has reported an FIR at the Hatim Thane (Palwal district, Haryana).

*Sayeda's name has been changed to protect the victim's privacy.

  3. Proud of u sis.. Keep up the good work. I wish saeda a speedy recovery.
We really need to step forward and support abolishing this dowry system, making people know the need of it, and the importance of it. I wonder how still in 21st century our people have such thoughts. They are in the tech development but u think their minds couldnt adapt the change. Social awareness is must, young minds should be taught about the good and bad, and those who can't be taught an example must be set by punishing those who did such unlawful acts according to law, and should be published nationwide, making everyone know that this is the result of doing such acts. Still many women would be tolerating such tortures, and this is because of our culture which says a daughter that once you are married you have to die there. But its the time to wake up, time to change, woman today is no less than a man, and the best example is my sister here. Fighting for a good cause, fearless of anything. Proud of u dear sis.. Keep it up.. Our love and support is always with u.

  5. It's a shame that such things still go on in the 21st century. There is a lot that needs to change.
